Item Description
Julien specialized in rustic genre scenes featuring peasants working in the field or tending to their animals. In general, the subjects were hard at work and show quite a bit of movement with great detail in the painting. The horse's breath contacting the cold air is a perfect example of this attention to detail. While little is know about his formal artistic training, it is thought that his style and choice of subject matter were based closely on the works of the French Realist artists Julien Dupre (1851-1910) and Georges Laugee (b.1853).
