Joseph Kossonogi was born in Budapest, Hungary in 1908. After studying at the Berlin Academy of Art, he traveled for further studies to France, Netherlands and Spain. After which Kossonogi immigrated to Mandate Palestine after which he settled in Tel Aviv by 1926. Once in Tel Aviv, Kossonogi worked to form a collective of young artists, known as Massad and soon began exhibiting thereafter into the 1930s.
Kossonogi was an award winning artist, winning the prestigious Histadrut Prize in 1966 and the Nordau Prize by 1976.
The current work depicts a woman in an elaborate yellow gown with another woman in blue, possibly a street vendor, whom is portrayed on her knees handing the woman in yellow two stemmed flowers with a bucket of flowers to her right. Behind the women can be seen two more figures seated on a bench and include a male figure in black with what appears to be a stringed instrument and a woman seated next to him.
All figures are devoid of facial features and are depicted in an abstracted space with hues of color.
Signed in the lower right corner and numbered '178 / 200' with the paper watermark showing through in the lower right.
Presented with blue bands around the work on the white mat with silver finished wood frame and glazed.
