Item Description
José García Ortega (Spanish, 1921-1990) was born in Arroba de los Montes in Spain and died in Paris in 1990.
As an artist Ortega took on a variety of media, including painting, sculpture and printmaking.
Ortega is known to have joined the Communist party and was arrested and sentenced to time in prison in 1947. Once acquitted, Ortega attended the National School of Graphic Arts in Madrid and by 1953 received a scholarship from the French government to study art.
His art, specifically printmaking, won him acclaim and awards. The current lithographic print is an abstracted figural image with two distinct people on a plane devoid of clues about the landscape or location. Swaths of black and green with other hues come together to form an abstracted ground.
Pencil signed out of plate to the lower right corner and numbered '4 / 120'
Presented matted and in a brass mounted wood frame and glazed with glass.
Sight: 19 3/4"H x 25 1/2"W
Frame: 27 3/4"H x 33"W
Condition: Slight discoloration around the mat suggesting possible mat burn. Could be re matted and framed for preservation. The frame is slightly loose but overall the image is crisp and presents well.
