John Jay Hoover, born Cordova 1919, Aleut, Grapevieew, Washington, noted for Alaskan Native Art. Many pieces being in museums.
His commissions include installation at the Alaska Native Medical Center in Anchorage. A bronze sculpture installed at White House titled Seaweed People. He was recognized by the Heard Museum in Phoenix. Width open is 24".
This triptych titled Volcano Woman I refers to an Aleut legend in which a beautiful woman emerges from a volcano and meets a cormorant that has transformed himself into a human.
The large triptych made of red cedar, with metal hinges and paint decorated.
Titled and signed on verso, Volcano Woman I, signed John Hoover and dated 1990.
51" high, 12 1/4" wide (closed) and 24 1/4" wide open.
