John Charles Maggs (British, 1819-1896) oil on canvas painting depicting a heavily loaded stagecoach being pulled by a four horses over a dirt road through the English landscape. Maggs has fantastically painted the atmosphere as cloudy and rainy with umbrellas having been placed over the cargo on board the stagecoach to keep dry. There are two coachmen seated up front, one with a whip, while two foot men can be seen riding the rear.
The artist has quite fabulously painted mud and dirt spots near the rear wheels of the stagecoach which are to further impress the wet and muddy landscape the stagecoach is depicted traveling through.
The stagecoach has verbiage written to the side door which appears to state "Bath Wells Taunton Exeter"

Presented in a carved and gilt finished frame with thin linen filet.
Condition: Lined, with minute areas of craquelure but overall in good condition with minor wear around the trim near where the stretched canvas meets the frame. Overall in good form and presents very nicely.
