John Charles Maggs was a British artist whom painted primarily oil paintings and lived from 1819 until his death in 1896.
As an artist Maggs painted numerous fabulous works depicting stage coaches with figures and majestic appearing horses pulling the load in varied naturalistic landscapes. The current one depicts a packed stage coach with a rider, seen with his whip, and numerous passengers being pulled by four horses on a dirt road through a rural English town.
Signed "J.C. Maggs / Bath 1878" to the lower left corner.
Presented in a carved and gilt finished frame with thin linen filet.
Condition: The painting was lined and exhibits craquelure to sections including the lower left corner. The frame has losses of gilt finish and nics and chips and wear commensurate with age and display / handling. Overall the painting despite wear presents very well.
