This vignette commemorates the great boxing matches between Joe Lewis and Max Schmeling during the 1930s. The work includes 4 photographic prints of the two boxers mid fight well composed around a slab with Joe Louis' autograph well presented on a matt which mirrors the corners of a boxing mat.
The two heavyweights fought two separate fights, the first in 1936 and second in 1938. The first fight was won by Schmeling by knockout in the 12th round while the 2nd fight was won by Louis with a knockout in the 1st round.
These fights came to embody broader sociopolitical issues of their time. Joe Louis became the most significant African American athlete of his age and most successful black fighter since Jack Johnson. The significance of these fights was further enhanced because representatives of the United States together with representatives from Nazi Germany attended the fights during the tumultuous 1930s. Therefore these fights and athletes came to embody the struggle between democracy and the Nazi regime.
The four photographic prints, together with the autographed slab as noted above are wonderfully composed on a matt that mirrors the 4 corners of a boxing mat and the whole composition is well framed and glazed.

Condition: There is some age related wear to the colors of photographs and matt along with the ink of the autograph. Even with the age related wear the work presents very nicely overall.
