Jim Timmins (Am. 1912–1990) was an American artist and educator recognized for his diverse work in sculpture, painting, and mixed media. While he is also known for expressionistic oil paintings, his sculptural work often utilized industrial or natural found materials.
A similar sculpture is part of the permanent collection at the Western Connecticut State University (WCSU) Archives and Special Collections. The piece is titled "Automotem Totem". By pairing a word that evokes machinery ("automotem") with "totem"—a symbol of spiritual or ancestral significance—Timmins highlights the intersection of industrial, functional objects and modern artistic icons.
The piece is comprised of small industrial wood and metal parts including several Industrial Era Foundry Patterns with discs, finials, knobs, block print parts and letters, some stamped and painted parts and surmounted with a clock.
The piece retains a brass plaque with title and artist name and also incised by the artist and dated as shown.
Dimensions: 17" W, 16" D and 95" H
Condition: minor losses, overall good condition with wear, scratches, rubbing, consistent with age.
