Item Description
Jean Bonovoisin was a French painter and engraver. A pupil of Callet and Doyen, he won second prize in the Prix de Rome competition in 1774 with Erasistratus Discovering the Cause of Antiochus' Illness to be His Love for Stratonica. Under the French Revolution he and Wicar administrated the central museum of arts (what would become the musée du Louvre).
This, an oil on canvas depicting a fine lady, probably nobility, wearing a blue turban, a square cut neckline to her dress draped with a patterned silk scarf and accentuated with gold jewelry.
Signed lower left Bonvoisin.
Presented in a gilt and paint decorated carved frame.
Yellow French shipping label on verso.
