Item Description
An 'A Compendiario' Footed Crespina: Cupid decoration. This important antique Italian tazza or footed compote bowl with scalloped mouth rim is exquisite. The compote stands on a circular foot, rising up to the circular form, scalloped bowl. The center which is directly above the pedestal connecting the foot with the bowl is slightly raise and depicts a wonderful Putti / Cherub with wings seen standing with his right hand extended and pointing his pointer finger forward. The reserve is enclosed in three concentric blue rings with a wonderful decorative body depicting foliate imagery in blue and a wonderful yellow to amber hue all on a crackle glazed white ground.
There is a series of numbers written in red in the space within the foot ring which is likely an older inventory number.
There is a Christie's sale tag underfoot.

Provenance: Purchased at Christie's Auction House on June 1, 1994 in sale # 7944 - Important Italian Maiolica from the Arthur M. Sackler Collection as lot # 42.
Condition: There are areas around the rim where the glaze is slightly discolored and possibly are older restoration. There are also rim frits and minute areas of loss to glazed body. The entire compote bowl, pedestal and foot are glazed, with only the bottom of the foot ring where it was fired is left unglazed. Although there is wear it is certainly commensurate with age and overall this is an excellent example of Italian Majolica that presents magnificently.
