Item Description

An important and impressive 17th century carved "debtors chair." The throne-like torture chair features a beautifully carved and arched hood back, depicting figures, crests, and foliate scrolls flanked by barley twist posts. The interior top rail bears the phrase "peace and contentment" while the apron reads "abide ye here," creating a welcoming appearance that betrays the sitter with a collapsing seat and concealed leg bars that appear with the pull of a lever. Dated of 1698 carved along bottom panel.

Verbal provenance: Previously displayed at a 1960's Detroit dress shop. The leg trap mechanism was deactivated because the shop owner once sat in it and was trapped the entire night!

Condition: Displays well with expected wear. Surface scratches, nicks, finish wear, and scattered checking with the most notable wear to the seat cover. Evidence of past repairs, restorations and alterations. Evidence of later carved detailing likely done sometime in the 19th century. The trapping mechanism is reported to be deactivated and has not been tested.

Dimensions: Approx. 78 1/2" H x 42 1/2" W x 24" D
