Item Description
Homer Martin (American, 1836 -1897) was an important American artist, best known for his impressive landscape paintings. Homer Martin's ouevre is aligned with the Hudson River School, having studied with William Hart and Edward Gay.
Martin was an associate of the National Academy of Design in New York by 1868. Soon afterwards, Martin traveled to Europe where he became entranced with the works of Barbizon school artists when his paintings took on a darker tonality with loose, elongated brushstrokes.
The current painting depicts a dark forest landscape with only minute openings between the dense folaige for sun to illuminate.
Signed lower left corner.
Presented in an elaborate gilt finished frame.

Condition: The frame exhibits some splits and losses of pigment but is stable. The canvas has been relined. Under blacklight there does appear to be some in painting / old restoration. The tree on the right hand side of the canvas has been touched up from the mid section down to the ground. A few other small spots of wear, loss of pigment about but despite wear the painting presents very nicely.
