Item Description
Hitchcock Furniture painted & stenciled two tier drawer nightstand or end table of ebonized mahogany. Rectangular table top raised upon rolled tapered legs, stenciled laurel leaf along top. Ebonized drawer opens to reveal handwritten letter “Choice of a Woman” which closes with a bronze and wood geometric pull. Ebonized black square shaped shelf.
Hitchcock, son of American Revolutionary War Veeran, he attended Episcopal Academy of Chershire, and apprenticed to woodworker Silas Cheney. In 1818, he opened his first furniture factory in Riverton, Connecticut known as Hitchcocksville where he first started with chairs and parts but with additional training with a clockmaker Eli Terry, he mass produced the chairs and retailed them nationally. He created his own way to apply his own stenciled original details. Company suffered financially and sold in 1843.
Condition: In overall good condition with expected signs of age and use. Rounded corners, and throughout form have minor chips of wood. Captured in photos.
