This is a gorgeous early example of Gourgue's colorful still life paintings, depicting his signature surrealistic style. The texture is amazing. This is a great piece of artwork for any collector of Haitian art. Gourgue's artwork is held by many museums, both national and international.
Jacques-Enguerrand Gourgue was born in Port-au-Prince in 1931, and died in 1996. He was undisputedly the leading figure in modern Haitian painting. His interest in art surfaced early. Drawing and painting became his favorite subjects in school. He joined the Centre d’Art in 1947. At age seventeen he finished The Magic Table, now in the Museum of Modern Art, New York. Never formally trained, Gourgue has mastered all the techniques of the academician, without losing his highly personal style. His visual vocabulary was established from the very beginning. The mountains of Haiti, skeletal trees, peasants and their huts, poor people, and all the accoutrements of voodoo are the main elements out of which he composes paintings which often seem surrealistic.
The painting is in overall good condition. There are two minor chips to the paint (seen in closeup photos above). One is on the flower vase, and the other is in the lower left corner where an original frame nail punctured the masonite.
