George Henry Bogert was a 19th / 20th century American artist, born in New York City in 1864.
Bogert studied at the National Academy of Design, followed by studying under the great American artist Thomas Eakins in New York City.
Bogert was a "frequent exhibitor at the Society of American Artists, the National Academy of Design, and elsewhere. In 1899, he was elected into the National Academy of Design as an Associate member."
His fabulous oil paintings have been displayed at prestigious institutions including the "Metropolitan Museum of Art, National Gallery, Corcoran Gallery of Art, Buffalo Fine Arts Academy, Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, Huntington Library, Pennsylvania Academy, Brooklyn Museum, Edinburgh Museum in Scotland, Shanghai Club in China" amongst other.
The current painting wonderfully depicts an Impressionist style landscape depicting a brilliant sunset in Venice, Italy. Bogert has imbued the work with brilliant light and a sense of life. Sailboats can be seen flanking the central open water with the sunsetting through a spray of clouds.
Inscribed and titled on verso in pencil.
Presented in a decorative gilt finished frame with a band of carved foliate motif in relief.

Condition: There is slight warping to the panel, craquelure and some losses to the painted finish. Under blacklight there appears to be some old restoration including in-painting to the lower right and left mainly with some extending up the right side as well as the left. Despite wear the painting presents marvelously overall. See lot images for further visual inspection as they are considered part of the overall condition report.
