Georg Jensen sterling silver and blue synthetic sapphire set necklace, pattern #1.
This lovely vintage articulated necklace from Georg Jensen features a floral and foliate link patterning, set with round and oval shaped cabachon synthetic blue sapphires, bezel set, and finished with a toggle style clasp.
This necklace is rather unique, in that it has two workmanship hallmarks. The original necklace was made between 1910 and 1925 (with the corresponding hallmarks), at which time the necklace also had an additional two foliate link and one floral link, and was finished with a hidden box style clasp. At some point in time, post 1979 (with the corresponding post 1945 and 925 hallmarks), the necklace was retrofit. The two foliate and one floral link and the hidden box clasp were removed and replaced with a chain link end and a toggle style clasp, to give the necklace an updated look.
Pattern number 1 was designed by Georg Jensen himself. "Typically using naturalistic designs, it is obvious that he pulled inspiration from his own rural background as well as the Skonvirke trends of the time, as well as its sister movement, Art Nouveau, which was prevalent in one of his favorite cities, Paris. Jensen himself, has admitted to having been influenced by Renaissance styles, however upon closer inspection, his stylistic leanings are more current. There's a specific restraint to his designs, and his designs often reflect a more impressionist style rather than a realism in the way his floral designs do not necessarily reflect a particular piece of flora, and often appear mixed, and in as such, he creates his own naturalistic motifs. His use of a variety of semiprecious gemstones, (almost entirely cabochon cut) has provided him a wonderful variety of color and nuance to accent the pieces rendered entirely in silver, as well as utilizing hammering and shading techniques to bring his pieces to life." It was also very common, in the early and mid 20th century, for Jensen to use synthetic blue sapphires.
