Georg Jensen sterling silver "Amoeba" pattern number 322 brooch, circa 1961. This gorgeous sterling silver brooch was designed by Henning Koppel in 1953, as brooch pattern number 322 (the "Amoeba" bracelet was designed in 1947), and "was inspired by natural, organic forms, specifically microscopic organisms and biomorphic shapes". The brooch has a pierced, naturalistic form and a high polished finish.
This brooch was imported into London from Denmark in 1961 where it was retailed, which accounts for the London import hallmarking.
"Henning Koppel experimented with organic and sculptural forms in his design and art, often drawing inspiration from nature. It should be noted that upon first glance, his designs might seem incredibly strange and abstract, though natural forms abound and associations with the natural world abound as one becomes more familiar with his designs. His works are unique also in that, though they draw from nature for inspiration, they are nothing like the Skonvirke artists of the past, with great acanthus leaves or bunches of grapes. Devoid of much decoration, they resemble also functionalist ideals, despite breaking with the functionalist traditions that preceded."
