Item Description
French Louis XV style mantel clock features gilt and patinated bronze. The mantel clock rests on four dolphin head form supports with ball form feet and is in cartel form decorated with shells, seaweed, and scrolling foliate decoration and is surmounted with a wonderful finial in the form of a patinated bronze winged cherub blowing a horn and can be seen seated and suppressing a fish form beast below. The cherubs hand appears to push the sea creature's head downward in a wonderful and engaging decorative element.
The reverse with a circular hinged back plate that can be opened to reveal the interior working which is engraved "L C / 261"
The front clock face is protected by a hinged, circular glass plate which opens to reveal a wonderful white clock face with roman numerals and gilt openwork hour and minute hands. There are two openings on the clock face where a key would likely wind the clock but the keys are not present.
Condition: There is some wear to the gilt finish and there are no keys present to test the clock but overall the mantel clock appears marvelously and the wear is surely commensurate with age.
