Item Description

A marvelously painted work by artist Frank Moss Bennett, best known for his portraits and genre scenes depicting historical figures and scenes with architecture.
The current masterpiece presents an impressive interior scene with towering arched window with nicely carved wooden wall panels and three figures seated within the interior. The figures, one of which can be seen in traditional red coat and black hat with two other men in traditional attire. A collection of birds hanging on the wall behind the gentleman in red coat.
Signed and dated lower left hand corner.
Presented in an impressive carved and gilt finished frame bearing a small plaque with the artist name.

Provenance: Sotheby's, Billingshurst, West Sussex, United Kingdom, February 1, 1994, Selected Watercolours And Oil Paintings, lot # 145, hammer price: 6,800 British Pounds; MacConnal-Mason & Son Ltd (of which a gallery label can be seen on verso.)

Condition: Lined canvas, some craquelure to the painting and areas which flouresce around the trim and likely are commensurate with old restoration and in painting. Minor losses and wear to the gilt finished frame.
Despite wear the painting presents very handsomely.
