Item Description
A Chinese wucai decorated porcelain 'Carp' bowl.
The term Wucai means "five colors". Wucai decorated wares typically included a combination of underglaze cobalt blue along with overglaze enamels in iron red, yellow and green. These wares were labor intensive and were typically painted in underglaze blue and then glazed and fired. Afterwards, the rest of the design would be painted in overglaze enamels and fired again at a lower temperature to cure the enamels.
The current bowl features a central roundel depicting two carp swimming amongst water lillies and other aquatic flora bordered within double underglaze blue bands. The border depicting 6 more carp fish in differing positions with aquatic flora and fauna.
On verso another 6 carp can be seen swimming and leaping above the band of waves which can be seen surround the unglazed foot ring.
Underfoot a Qing Dynasty, Kangxi (1662-1722) style, geometric character can be seen in double circles.
The bowl is possibly of the period, or later Qing Dynasty.
Condition: Good overall with slight chip to the mouth rim and gentle wear to the overglaze enamels. A minute pock mark can be seen in the center of the blue fauna in the center of the central roundel.
Wear is commensurate with age and handling but overall in good form and presents exceptionally well.
