Exceptional 19th C. Set of 4 Arrtibuted to: Zhao Zhiqian (Chinese, 1829-1884) Watercolor On Paper Paintings. An exceptional set of four antique Chinese watercolor paintings on paper paintings by 19th Century, Chinese artist, Zhao Zhigian (Chinese, 1829-1884.
Zhao Zhiqian, "aesthetically his paintings are closely linked with the bright, colorful style that was popular among the coltured elite in late Qing and early Republic period Shanghai." 
Zhiqian masterfully depicts each painting with a single life sized maiden, all presented in wonderfully decorative robes. In fact Zhao Zhiquian's "innovative style with generous applications of color and bold brushwork, complimented by his inky calligraphy...Many of the brush techniques the artist uses are derived from his study of epigraphy and early calligraphic script forms from the Northern Wei Dynasty (386-534)."
The women can be seen holding an assortment of items including a handwarmer, with piereced lid, a fan, along with bangles to their wrists and elongated finger nails from their hands. 
Each of the 4 paintings are oriented vertically, with the detailed figural imagery being presented against neutral ground, with the watercolor hues giving a wonderful visual aesthetic.  Each of the four works also features two linear columns of black calligraphy with two red hall mark seals notating the calligrapher. 
Each, fantastically presented within gilt finished wood frames and glazed. 
Condition: The paintings displays expected wear commensurate with age and display. There are minor tears and creases to trim edges and the paper is gently warped.
