Item Description
Edmund Darch Lewis (American [PA], 1835-1910) gouache painting on paper depicting two figures at the lower center of the compositions scaled by a lush tropical landscape with palm trees and vibrant green foliage overlooking a calm bay with gently rolling hills leading into a brilliant sunset casting a warm orange glow across the land. Signed and dated 1861 lower left.
Displayed matted with a gilt fillet in a gilt frame with a fine stippled inner border.

About the Artist:
Edmund Darch Lewis was an American artist known for oil and watercolor paintings of marine landscapes. He studied with artist Paul Weber of the Hudson River School, and became an associate of the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts at 24. While his earlier works were mainly in oil, his later works tended to be in watercolor, noted for their Luminist style.

Condition
The signature in the lower left is slightly out of sight due to how it was lined but the artwork is in good form overall.
