Donald "Don" Francis Mertz Jr. (American [NC], 1936-2017) "Never Never Never I" acrylic on canvas depicting an abstract composition of pink, black, and spring green gestural marks and splatters against a white background. Signed and titled on verso. The canvas is mounted to a stretcher, unframed.
Accompanied by a statement by the artist, reading:
"Creating art is a demanding passion...and a perfect opportunity to smoke a good cigar, sip a great single malt scotch, and listen to Willie Nelson.
In my most recent work, The White Series, the paintings are predominantly white with glimpses of color and vague marks. This near-absence of color challenges me to focus on only line, shape and texture to create a composition that is complex and visually satisfying. There is not angst being resolved, no narrative, no subject, no message in my art.
Paint is applied with trowels, putty knives, and artists' brushes. The final surface is a chaotic, tactile landscape of opaque, translucent, rugged, smooth, and gritty areas-the result of countless layers of drips, gels, additives, lines, gestures, and shades of white paint.
I paint because I love the satisfaction of creating art that people find intriguing, compelling, and aesthetically pleasing. It could be because of the mood it evokes-the memories it stirs up- or for reasons they may not be able to quite articulate. For some, it could simply be, 'I just really love that painting.'"
Condition: Displays well with light wear.
