Donald "Don" Francis Mertz Jr. (American [NC], 1936-2017) "1-800-Blooms" acrylic on canvas depicting an impressionist floral arrangement in pretty hues of blue, yellow, and red against a textural cream background. Signed and titled on verso. The canvas is mounted to a stretcher, unframed.
Accompanied by a statement by the artist, reading:
"Painting for me is fun. It is also a serious, demanding passion...and a perfectly good reason to smoke a cigar sip a great single malt scotch and listen to Willie Nelson.
Admittedly, smoking a good cigar, sipping a fine single malt scotch and listening to Willie's rendition of "The Last Thing I needed the First Thing This Morning" are not activities one usually associates with creating art. For me they are.
As happens with most abstract artists I am often asked about the meaning of my paintings. And I can only answer "There is none."
My paintings are not abstractions of any person, place or thing. There is not attempt to deliver a message, support a cause, prevent split ends or cure restless leg syndrome. There is no foundation of subject matter. There is an expanse of colors and textures, in which a variety of forms and shapes seem to appear, disappear and re-appear. I am influenced by my memories, moods, errors, sins and thoughts- or what I had for lunch.
It is exciting for me to paint. There is the satisfaction of making art that someone finds compelling for reasons they may or may not be able to articulate. It could be the mood it evokes, the memories it stirs up, or it could just be as simple as 'I really like that painting.'"
