Daniel Ridgway Knight (American, 1839-1924), Oil On Canvas, "At The Well".
Daniel Ridgway Knight (American, 1839 - 1924) was an important American artist born in Pennsylvania.
Knight was trained at the École des Beaux-Arts, Paris and later worked in the private studio of Meissonier. Knight was well known for his fabulous naturalistic paintings genre paintings.
Knight went on to earn "his first major distinction in France at the Paris Salon in 1882" along with numerous other awards including the gold medal of honor from the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, Philadelphia in 1893.
The current painting depicts a maid in traditional attire, seated on the rim of a water well which is nestled into a sensationally painted garden landscape bursting with life and color. sensationally painted with differing level of impasto throughout.
Signed and inscribed Paris, lower left.
Presented in a carved and gilt finished frame.
Condition: Lined canvas which can be seen through the lucite backing over the canvas on verso.
Gentle wear to the painted finish around the trim edges. There are some losses to the gilt finish on the frame which can be seen in the lot images. Despite wear the painting presents very nicely overall.
