Daniel Ridgway Knight (American, 1839 - 1924) was an important American artist whom traveled abroad to train at prestigious institutions including the École des Beaux-Arts, Paris.
Knight is best known for awe inspiring, naturalistic, genre paintings.
Knight went on to earn "his first major distinction in France at the Paris Salon in 1882" along with numerous other awards including the gold medal of honor from the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, Philadelphia in 1893.
The current painting presents a figure of a maid in working attire, with her hair pulled up and back, appearing to ponder life as she stands by the riverside with a jug for fetching water with her right arm and clenched hand supporting her chin. The naturalistically painted landscape is in full bloom, with flowering trees and tall wild grasses abutting the river at its bank.
Ridgway knight infuses the scene with a myriad of color and detail, affording the viewers gaze to meander through the fabulous scene.
Signed "Ridgway Knight / Paris" to the lower right corner.
Presented in an impressively carved and gilt finished frame.
Condition: Lined canvas, with very minor wear and craquelure commensurate with age and display.
Overall the painting is in fabulous condition and displays exceptionally well overall.
