Item Description
Craig Kodera (American, B. 1956) "Only One Survived" lithograph published by the Greenwich Workshop Press, circa 1995. Depicts a group of planes in battle against a pale purple and blue sky full of clouds with yellow accents.
A typed description at the center bottom reads "Midway Island, June 4, 1942, 7:00 AM: Grumman TBF Avengers on their maiden combat flight are attacked by A6M Mitsubishi Zero fighters from the aircraft carrier Akagi. Of all the VT-8 squadron aircraft in this aerial engagement, only 8-T-1-flown by Ensign Albert K. "Bert" Earnest, pilot, and Radioman Third Class Harry H. Ferrier, tunnel gunner-survived. The following seventy-two hours were the turning point of the war in the Pacific: in sinking four of the most powerful Japanese aircraft carriers, and thereby eliminating Japan's most experienced pilots, The U.S. Navy set the stage for eventual victory."
Plate signed lower right, pencil signed by Kodera and numbered AP 39/50. Pencil signed by Bert Earnest and Harry H. Ferrier below the image. The piece is presented loose, unframed, with the original accompanying papers and folio from the Greenwich Workshop Press.
