About the artist:
Clare Romano was trained as a painted at The Cooper Union in New York City. She worked in Robert Blackburn's Creative Lithographic Workshop in 1949. Her works often involve imagery from places shes lived and spent time along the eastern coast including New York City, New Jersey and Truro and Provincetown on Cape Cod, MA. Romano's woodcuts show her deep appreciation for the texture of the medium, the wood block, as well as her penchant for creating a varied printed surface. By 1958, Romano was in Italy and there she began to use cardboard and paper to build her relief plates; and during a residence in Yugoslavia with the U.S. Information Agency in 1965-66, she built upon skills with the collograph technique, whereby she collaged materials including cloth, cardboard and found objects onto the printing plate with modeling paste. Romano is responsible for intruducing younger generations to print making as an art form. She worked on faculty at the New School of Social Research, NY; Pratt Graphics Center as well as Pratt Institute, Brookly, NY. Romano also co authored several printmaking handbooks including "The Complete Printmaker" with her husband.
