Circa 1840 letter from William H. Seward to Henry D. Moore, Captain of the Eighth Missouri Militia Cavalry (Union). Seward (May 16, 1801 – October 10, 1872) was United States Secretary of State from 1861 to 1869, and had also served as governor of New York and as a US Senator. He was an opponent of the spread of slavery in the years leading up to the American Civil War, and was a prominent figure in the Republican Party in its early years. Accompanied by a portion of the envelope with metered postal stamp and address. Mounted, glazed and matted in an attractive gilt frame.
Not authenticated or examined out of frame.

Condition: Paper with expected toning, frame with light loss to edges; none of which detract.
