Chimu / Inca (1300 AD) double chambered ceramic whistling vessel embellished with bird formed ornament, North Coast Peru.
Listed as either Chimu / Inca as the Chimu are known to have maintained the largest and most important political system in Peru before the Inca. This item is dated to 1300 AD.

Whistling vessels are believed to have held ceremonial functions. Whistling jars or vessels frequently feature a bird form emblem which conceals the whistle within its head, as is the case with this particular double chambered vessel. The whistle was sounded by blowing the spout, but could often also be activated by means of pouring liquid from one chamber to the other which could create a bird like whistling sound.

The current black finished vessel is fabricated from two shaped globular vessels, connected in the middle. One vessel features a bottle form, cylindrical spout with a bridge form handle to the opposite vessel which also features a cylindrical spout but is surmounted with a bird form finial with pierced whistling hole inside.
7"h x 6 1/2"l x 4"w

*WE NO LONGER HAVE THE ORIGINAL PAPERWORK FROM DAVID BERNSTEIN FINE ART. HOWEVER, THE LISTING PAGE WHICH CAN BE FOUND IN THE LOT IMAGES CAN BE PRINTED OUT FROM THE LOT IMAGES IF SO DESIRED FOR RECORD KEEPING PURPOSES.

Condition: There is wear to the black finish with a slight split / crack to the globular vessel with the bird form finial. There is a break with loss to a small section underfoot which rises with a crack upwards around the neck of the vessel where it meets the globular body. It likely was an old repair to make stable but the break should be noted.
Despite the wear which is commensurate with age and handling, the vessel presents as a decorative object from antiquity.
