Item Description

Camille Joseph Etienne Roqueplan (French, 1802/03 - 1855) was a French Romantic painter specializing in genre and historical scenes along with landscape paintings. This particular painting depicts a group of figures in the forest with two women lavishly dressed reclining on the forest floor with another woman elevated on a higher surface in the upper left quadrant and a male figure seen pointing with his head turned back in the mid ground.
The focal point is on the two women seated in the foreground. The work is painted in darker colors with the two women in the foreground wearing brightly colored and well painted garments that immediately draw the viewers gaze.
Presented in a well carved and gilt wood frame with a plaque denoting the artists name "C. Roqueplan"
15 1/2"H x 11"W - sight
24"H x 19 1/2"W - framed

Condition: There is heavy wear and losses to the painted finish with several punctures and tears to the canvas that can be seen in the attached lot images. There are two pieces of tape that have been adhered to the back of the canvas to prevent further damage in one spot but a more professional restoration is needed. The canvas could also be cleaned and surely the muted colors of the forest landscape would shine brighter. There is also wear to the lavish gilt wood frame which can be seen in the lot photographs.
