Item Description

A finely hammered round bowl with twin angular handles and raised on three tassel shaped feet. The exterior features a raised inscription all around in Latin, with old English style lettering "Henricus Septimus Dei Gracia Rex Danglae Et Francie" (which translates to Henry the Seventh, by the Grace of God, King of England and France). Also decorated with a floral Tudor rose, a raised lion rampant (which was symbolic to Henry of majesty, strength, and royal authority) and an anchor motif (which represented hope, stability and safe harbor). Marked London, 1925-26, made by F.J. Ross and Sons.

Historically, the "Winchester bushel" was a legal standard of volume for agricultural products, and silver replicas were made to be functional measures, as noted by Antique Silver Spoons.

"Frederick James Ross was a British silversmith and artisan based in Winchester, England, active during the late 19th to early 20th century. He was particularly associated with the Arts & Crafts movement, known for its revival and reinterpretation of medieval and handcrafted styles. The workshop was in production from 1904 to 1938."
