Item Description

Set of 4 Antique English, George II, sterling silver gilt candlesticks with bobeches.
All are marked underfoot: George II, London, 1744, Eliza Godfrey.

Eliza Godfrey was active from circa 1720 - 1766. Eliza was known to have been one of the premier silver and goldsmiths of her generation. Godfrey had been born to a well known silversmith herself which was where she trained. Subsequently she went on to marry twice, both times to silversmiths in London.
Following the death of her husband Benjamin Godfrey in 1741, Eliza took up heading their business by herself producing magnificent silver with fabulous Rococo designs where she took on loyal clientele, including the Duke of Cumberland and other upper class members. "Her work was most certainly influenced by the traditions and silversmithing of the French Huguenots.

The set of four silver gilt candlesticks are fabulously designed and executed. The candlesticks decorated in a marvelous Rococo style rest on hexagonal form foot with shell, scroll and fluting to the foot rim which is carried on in fabulous fashion as ones eye continues upwards from the foot, to the baluster form shaft with wonderful swirled and foliate decoration throughout. Each candlestick is adorned with its bobeche.

Condition: Hallmarks are worn, as is the gilded finish. There are dings and dents to the bobeche collars which are concealed when the bobeches are in. The bobeches are also unmarked but test as silver.
Please see lot images as they are also included in the condition report.
