A large and fine antique fire grate set or fire basket, a comprehensive assembly designed for an open fireplace, more than likely English.. This specific style is a Neoclassical or Regency-style fire basket, characterized by its elegant brass and iron construction and ornate decorative details.
The unit comprised of a large, heavy cast iron fireback plate at the rear that protects the masonry of the fireplace from intense heat and radiates warmth back into the room.
Brass andirons at the front that hold logs off the floor.
The grate or basket, horizontal iron bars, between the andirons form the basket that holds the fuel (wood or coal).
And the curved, pierced brass piece at the bottom front is a decorative fretwork apron, a common feature in high-end 18th and 19th-century English fireplace sets.
The set features urn-shaped finials (The smaller urns with Greek Key banding) and a pierced fretwork apron, which are hallmark elements of the Neoclassical (Adam) or Regency periods. It is crafted from a combination of cast iron for heat-bearing parts and polished brass for decorative elements.
Dimensions: 35.75” wide by 16” deep by 30.25” high.
Condition: Please see detail photos. Evidence of age and use include a stabilized heat crack to the back fire board, expected use and fire wear to the interior as well as some aging to the brass and heat wear to the iron and brass elements being mentioned for accuracy as the presentation and function remain strong.
