"ALWAYS DID 'SPISE A MULE" mechanical bank circa 1879 - 1900. Cast iron mechanical bank by J.E. Stevens featuring a mule and seated man.
Identifying marks: under base with Pat'd Apr 22 1879; on base ""Always Did 'Spise A Mule"
This jockey version of this popular bank has excellent action. When a coin is placed in the jockey's mouth and the lever is pushed, mule bucks, throwing jacket overhead. As jockey's head hits the log below, coin drops into base.
Bank has green and brown painted base, retains partial red paint on jockey's hat and saddle stripes, brown pants.
Dimensions: 10 1/4" long, 2 7/8" wide and 8" high (when seated)
Condition: MISSING coin retainer, losses to paint consistent with age. Mechanically good, coin lands in slot 2 of 3 times tried.
