A Chinese Painted pottery tomb figure of an equestrian, Northern Wei Dynasty, circa A. D. 500.
WITH accompanying framed photograph and certificate from well known Asian arts dealer J.J. Lally & Co. which states:
"The male rider shown wearing a long tunic with deep sleeves over baggy pantaloons tied above the knee, a rounded helmet-like headdress closely fitted on his head, seated facing straight ahead with eyes fixed in a steady gaze and hands held out in front, astride an elegantly modelled horse standing four square on a rectangular base, with a simple bridle on the small head and ornamented with a wing-shaped crest between the ears, the rump with a plain crupper strap running under the tail which is dressed and knotted, with saddlecloth and the rider's pants and sleeves without color showing the pale grayish pottery, and with traces of earth from burial overall.
Height 8 7/8 inches (22.5 cm)
The fine modelling and sinified costume of this figure is typical of the Northern Wei tomb sculptures produced after the capital was moved to Luoyang in the last decade of the fifth century..."
Condition: Expected wear and loss of finish commensurate with significant age. Overall the equestrian is in stable condition and presents wonderfully. While ancient, the figure would easily adorn and embellish a display area in a contemporary home as well it would in a museum.
