Item Description
Alexander Calder (American, 1898 - 1976) was an American artist whom worked in a variety of media throughout his impressive career. Calder is most widely known as a sculptor of innovative kinetic mobiles; Calder also created large steel non kinetic sculptures. Calder is also known for painting which he began in earnest by the early 1920s and began printmaking by approximately 1925.
Similarly to Calder's evolution towards abstraction within his sculpture, his prints also moved toward abstraction by the early 1930s.
These abstracted prints often feature geometric shapes that often appear as if in motion.
By the 1940s and 50s, as his artistic reputation grew, so did his production of prints. Calder began creating lithographs in limited editions which were frequently based off original gouache paintings.
The current lithograph, "Orange Ciel" depicts polychrome circular spheres appearing to float within an Expressionist style landscape with a body of water below depicted with undulating blue and white alternating bands, with an orange hued sky above.
The lithograph is on paper and is pencil signed on the right hand lower corner and pencil numbered '98 / 100' to the lower left corner.

Condition: Gentle wear to the printed paper with some dark marks and slight creases to the upper right corner. Overall the print presents fantastically well and is a great opportunity to own a work by a Titan of Modern Art.
