After M.C. Escher (Dutch, 1898-1972) reproduction lithograph “Balcony” depicts a cityscape centered with a protruding balcony in Escher’s iconic surrealistic style. Balcony is based on a visit to Malta. In May 1935, Escher travelled on the freighter S.S. Verdi from Sicily to this microstate in the Mediterranean. In the autumn of 1935, Escher captured the view of the town and cargo ship in front of it in a woodcut. Given Escher’s fascination with reflections captured in spherical mirrors, he captured the stacked houses and balconies overlooking the water, in a diagonal way of leading the eye. The balcony appears as if he stretched over a hot air balloon. His pointiest application of shading is also a strong point in his style for this piece. Signed from the plate, top right. Framed in a silver finish metal frame, accented by a green mat.
Condition: In good overall condition with signs of age. Lacks glass for frame but is well preserved.
Framed measures: 28.25”l x 22.25”w x .75”d
