After Francisco Goya (Spanish, 1746-1828) antique print & oil on canvas “Red Boy” depicting “Don Manuel Osorio Manrique De Zuniga” originally painted as a full-length painting in 1787-88 of the son of Count and Countess of Altamira. Wearing an elaborate red Spanish style costume, he is shown playing with a pet magpie (which holds the painter's calling card in its beak), a cage full of finches, and three wide-eyed cats. In Christian art birds frequently symbolize the soul, and in Baroque art caged birds are symbolic of innocence. Goya may have intended this portrait as an illustration of the frail boundaries that separate the child's world from the forces of evil or as a commentary on the fleeting nature of innocence and youth. The painting omits the text along the original painting and print however is an interesting rendering of the 18th Century piece. The print is framed within a gilt frame.
Condition: In overall good condition with expected signs of age and wear including gilt loss, finish wear, some surface loss & water staining to painting, left unfinished along sides. Unframed, requires wiring.
Painting measures: 22 1/4”l x 18”w x 1”d
