Item Description

After August Rodin (French, 1840-1917) Bronze Sculpture, "Enfants Au Lezard", The Rudier Foundry, (originally conceived 1886, cast 1913) depicting the pair of young children with their expressive body postures almost resembling Michelangelo's "Pieta", one holding the other as they balance along a rocky cliff with a lizard crawling along the side. "Alexis RUDIER Fondeur PARIS" signed near base backside and retains A. Rodin signature along the base and underside beside the bear paw print and 97.

Verbal Provenance: Dick Polich, graduate of Yale University and founder of foundries including Tallix, Polich Art Work and Bear Paw made a mold from the original bronze sculpture that was purchased by Thomas Fortune Ryan. Thomas Fortune Ryan purchased the sculpture directly from the artist. The sculpture remained in the Ryan family and auctioned at CHRISTIE’S in 2010 (closed 4 November 2010). Dick Polich told Lord Joël that he made only four cast from the mold that he fabricated from the original Rodin, Enfants au Lézard, and that three of three were inscribed by him with a personal note to the three recipients which are hairs of Thomas Fortune Ryan. However, he told Lord Joël, the one that he cast for Lord Joël was only stamped inside with the paw prints of a Bear Paw leaving the sculpture an exact copy including the same bronze composition and patina. This is truly a one of one of a kind. Among the many artists that Dick Polich cast works for are Louise Bourgeois, Jeff Koons, Louise Nevelson, Frank Stella and many more.

Condition: With expected signs of age and wear including light surface marks but does not detract from overall appearance. Felt pads adhered to base. Please review photography.
