Item Description
A large late 18th / early 19th century Chinese famille rose decorated porcelain bottle form vase. Exquisitely decorated and formed with a flared trumpet form mouth leading to a slender neck and bulbous body, all raised on a flared foot. Embellished with alternating decorative bands including peonies and other geometric stylized motifs. The broad central band is decorated with a green hued, stylized key fret motif set against a mirror black ground.
Underglaze cobalt blue double rings can be seen underfoot, surrounding the area that has been drilled.
The drill hole found underfoot is the result of a common practice during the 19th century in which porcelain vases were drilled and to mounted with fittings to turn them into decorative table lamps. The drill hole is where electrical cords would have been strung through. This vase has since been demounted and returned to its original vase form.
Condition: wear to the glaze and enameled surface, in addition to the drilled hole and subsequent chipping to the underside as can be expected of the many vases which were drilled to make lamps during the 19th and 20th centuries.
