A large-format engraving with mezzotint by American engraver Alexander Hay Ritchie (1822-1895) after a painting by Francis Bicknell Carpenter (American; 1830-1900) titled The First Reading of the Emancipation Proclamation Before the Cabinet, printed in 1866. This scene, from the original painted in the White House in 1864, depicts President Abraham Lincoln with his cabinet, Edwin M. Stanton, Salmon P. Chase, Gideon Welles, Caleb B. Smith, William H. Seward, Montgomery Blair, and Edward Bates, around a table in Lincoln’s office with portraits of Simon Cameron and Andrew Jackson on the wall behind them. After the painting’s initial exhibition, this engraving was created by Ritchie for mass reproduction. Bicknell’s painting is currently on display in the U.S. Capitol Building. The print is titled to the lower center margin with copyright below and the artists’ names to the lower corners.
It is presented behind antique glass in a stained solid wood frame with a gold tone fillet and wire to the verso for handing. hanging.

Condition: moderate, uneven discoloration and foxing present throughout print paper; 2" vertical tear to upper left; edge wear visible with torn corner in upper right and creased corner to lower right; pitting and imperfections to antique glass; scuff marks, chips, and wear throughout frame; accretion to frame and glass; gap in backing board on right side with slight bow and wear under and around nails.
