Item Description

A well-kept antique "fainting" couch. Silk fabric. Sloping mahogany framed parlor couch with rolled arms and significantly turned legs. Canary yellow silk fabric to the piece. The back comes off when screws are removed. "This form of seating design gained popularity during the Victorian era. During this time, Victorian women, who often fainted from wearing tight corsets, would rely on this particular style of sofa to recover. The sofas were staples in what were supposedly called fainting rooms at the time." But interior designer Danielle Rollins has another theory. "During the Victorian era, once the housekeepers had made the bed, that was it and the lady of the room was not to get back in it until the bed had been turned down for her," she says. "It served as a respite for napping or reading."

Dimensions: 78" W x 34" H x 26" D

Conditions: great shape considering age, some piling to thread of fabric, brass inlay strip is coming out in middle of back, needs to be snipped or placed back into piece via buyer method, some small nicks and scratches throughout frame via age and use, screws were not removed to determine ability to remove back
