19th century 14k gold mourning locket with 10k gold chain. Featuring a heavily ornamented, shaped pendant having an oval locket that opens to reveal a glazed interior with a silk liner. The 10k gold chain features lovely filigree accents.
Oral provenance: the locket belonged to Adelaide Lee McKinnon 1848-1926 of North Carolina. She was the wife of Luther McKinnon, b. 1840 d. 1916. He served as a Confederate chaplain in the NC 30th and 36th regiments. He was he first Davidson alumnus to become president of the college, Reverend Luther McKinnon, D.D. was salutatorian of the class of 1861. He also served as the president of Floral College in Robeson County, North Carolina, and as a trustee of the Davidson College from 1870 until 1885, and President of the Board of Trustees from 1878 until 1885.
