Item Description
Handsome mahogany long case with beautiful flame to the base with light mahogany cross banding and ebony and fruitwood stringing. Sunburst marquetry to the upper corners.
Hood with freestanding fluted columns with Corinthian capitals supporting a swan neck pediment with striped marquetry pedestal in center. Half oval fan marquetry inserts above the columns. This case has a "Sheraton" styling, named after the English furniture designer who favored these and other motifs to decorate his furniture.
The polychrome dial with floral and geometric spandrels. The world globes hand painted (usually transferred) with geographic names of the time, such as "New Holland" for Austria. Subsidiary seconds and date dials above and below the center arbor. Delicately cut and stamped gilded hand mark the time. The moon phase passes to a sailing ship flying a British flag. All in all a magnificent clock with lovely proportion, dial and case.
