Martin Johnson Heade (American, 1819-1904) "Red Roses in Glass Vase" oil painting on canvas depicting a stunning still life with an arrangement of vibrant red roses and lush green leaves in a cylindrical clear glass vase full of water set atop a dark olive green sloped ground against a neutral green background. The scene is masterfully rendered with a keen eye for detail and a delicate hand, with great attention paid to the light cast on the forms, drawing the eye to the rich, fluttering petals of the blooms and the subtly reflections of the glass. Signed lower right.
Displayed with a linen liner in a rustic white finished frame with floral carved relief at the corners. Affixed with an artist/title plaque at the center bottom and topped with a picture light.

About the Artist:
Martin Johnson Heade was an American artist known for paintings of seascapes, hummingbirds, and floral still lifes. He studied art under folk artists Edward Hicks and Thomas Hicks before attending the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts and later the National Academy of Design in New York. Heade's depictions of landscapes focused on subtle, understated details rather than the grandeur of the Hudson River School. His works are included in the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and the National Gallery of Art in Washington D.C.

Presents well overall. Discoloration to the liner and finish wear to the frame that does not detract from the appeal of the piece.
