About the Artist:
Ludwig Bemelmans was a Austria-Hungarian (now Italy) born artist and writer born to father Lambert Bemelmans, a Belgian painter. After difficulty in school, he took up work at his uncle's hotel where he was mistreated by a headwaiter. After reportedly shooting the headwaiter, Bemelmans decided on immigrating to America rather than attend a reform school. While working at the Ritz-Carlton, he struggled to become an established painter and eventually left the hotel to become a full-time cartoonist. He is best known for the "Madeline" picture books.
