This artistic piece is a Santo Domingo kewa shell necklace, made by the Kewa Pueblo (formerly the Santo Domingo Pueblo) and features a large center pendant, crafted from a spiny oyster shell and decorated with intricate mosaic inlay work using turquoise, mother of pearl, and jet.
The pendant hangs from a string of heishi beads, which are handmade disk-shaped beads typically made from shell or turquoise (in this case, shell) and finished with a hook style clasp.
Kewa jewelry often uses materials representing environmental elements—turquoise for the sky and water, and shell for the earth.
Marks: 925
Dimensions: 22" long to 26" long x 3 3/8" long at center
Condition: Some fine nicking; crazing on mother-of-pearl; crack in the underside of the shell, but does not detract from the beauty or stability of the piece. In otherwise good overall estate condition
