Henri Lebasque (French, 1865-1937) "Illustration for Les Permissions de Clement Bellin by Jean Louis Vaudoyer” mixed media on paper combining watercolor and pencil to create a scene of a woman in an elegant teal gown emerging from a black carriage with red wheels being driven by a gentleman in a black top hot and yellow coat. The woman steps out onto a colorful path, echoing colorful forms in the background along a building lined with lush green trees. Signed lower right. Titled on a label affixed to the verso from M. Knoedler & Co, Inc.
The painting is beautifully presented with a silk mat and gilt fillet. The work is framed within a carved and gilt finished frame, featuring an interior trim of beaded decoration.

About the Artist:
Lebasque is primarily known for his work in the Post-Impressionist style. Lebasque began his training at the prestigious Ecole régionale des beaux-arts d’Angers, prior to his move to Paris in 1886. Notably Lebasque assisted Ferdinand Humbert with his decorative murals at the Pantheon. Lebasque went on to meet influential characters including Camille Pissarro along with Auguste Renoir among others.

Condition
Wear includes a pencil tip sized hole near the trim in the lower right corner, with another about an inch from the upper trim in the upper left quadrant close to center, and lastly a third minute hole in the upper right corner. There is an area in the upper right corner that has smudged but may be original to the creation.
