About the Artist:
Edouard-Léon Cortès was born in Lagny-sur-Marne, on the outskirts of Paris, France in 1882. Edouard's father Antonio, was himself an immigrant who had worked as an artist for the Spanish Royal Court before moving to France.Edouard-Léon Cortès eventually enrolled in the famous Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris, where from the start of his career showed great promise. Cortès' first Parisian street scene was accepted to the Salon des Artistes, Francis in 1901. Almost instantly, Cortès gained notoriety for his work, where he would continue until his death in 1969, only interrupted when called upon to fight in World War I.
Cortes is classified as a Post-Impressionist painter, with many masterpieces, including the current one, depicting notable Parisian cityscape scenes. Cortes displayed his impeccable talent in these urban environments, involving a flurry of activity ranging from the many people that appear to stroll up and down the boulevards, together with street vendors selling items like flowers and bicyclists riding in the street next to the many automobiles. His work has an Impressionistic tone, appearing as though the work in its entirety was painted a la plein air.
